Sabiya Power Plant Project in Kuwait
Only four months after the Shuwaikh Emergency Power Plant EPC was underway, HPI’s remarkable progress in having 80% of the Shuwaikh Plant built resulted in the team being asked to build an additional peak plant for Kuwait. The other three 2007 Emergency Power Projects had all experienced a variety miscues and false starts. This new plant, labeled the Subiya Emergency Power Plant, is located at the north eastern border of Kuwait, Iraq and Iran, at a place called Subiya. Unlike the Shuwaikh power plant, which was built inside a major city, this new plant was built next to one of Kuwait’s primary base load plants, a 1200MW plant in the desert. Once again HPI teamed up with SWES and Alghanim International to complete this power plant. With a lot of hard work and perseverance the Subiya plant was completed over the course of the next ten months. The team worked furiously, using all their resources to overcome the many obstacles inherent with the assumption of an existing contract.
Once again, as HPI began life as an Instrumentation and Controls company, it was natural for it to supply the Supervisory Control System (SCS/DCS) for both the Shuwaikh and Sabiya Peak Power Plants,. This system monitors and/or controls the six LM6000 Gas Turbines, Air Inlet Chillers, Gas Compressors, and miscellaneous balance of plant equipment associated with this sophisticated power plant. The Balance of Plant (BOP) and many other custom electrical panels for the plant were also built directly by HPI. The BOP panels are used to carry out control of miscellaneous items of plant equipment. For the Sabiya project HPI also manufactured the Transformer Protection Panels (TPP) that were required for the plant.
HPI was tasked Room equipment, consisting of six (8) displays for plant control, and two (2) 42” plasma monitors to show plant status. Along with the displays, HPI also supplied requisite control furniture, desks and consoles for both plants.
